For this unit I will be creating a music video which will be approximately 2 minutes in length. This will allow me to express my creative style and my favourite genre of cinematography and editing which is dark and twisted.
Treatment
Mood boards.
Visual effects mood board.
The images above are roughly of what I'd like to put into my music video as visual effects. One of the visual effects that is presented in the mood board is the bloody tears effect which I think will create a menacing effect in the video, leaving the viewer on edge. Another effect I hope to incorporate from the mood board is the shock wave effect, however contrary to the one on the mood board I will blend mine into the ground so It looks more realistic and effective. The third and final effect on my mood board is the black eyeballs effect which I'll in order to dehumanise the character in the music video as well as to add an unsettling atmosphere into the music video.
Special effects mood board.
This mood board is made up entirely of images of smoke grenades. This is because this is my only planned special effect which I plan to incorporate into my music video. I hope to disguise the smoke grenade in my video or have it out of the shot so that the smoke seems more ominous. I hope to have my character walk through it backwards facing the camera which I will reverse in post to make it look like he's walking out of it but in a weird manner. With different fast cuts to break up the smoke grenade scene I think it will add to the dark atmosphere of the movie.

Location Recce
Location 1: Stow Cum Quy, Station Road.
Location 2: Anglesey Abbey
During my second filming location recce I found and decided on many of the spots I'll use to film. Some can be seen above. I also decided the open space would be ideal for shots with my special effects. I've also gotten permission to film there through contacts I know who work there.
Location Recce Considerations.
- Transport and parking - There is a regular bus which comes from the city centre to the filming locations, parking is available off-site about a mile and a half away but won't be necessary.
- Is there enough space to film? - The locations are all very open and spacious, giving us enough space for our equipment and our scene with space to manoeuvre.
- Power source - There are no plug sockets or power sources on site however we will bring spare batteries for the camera to last us enough time.
- Noise - The area is quite windy and has many bird sounds however this is irrelevant because we won't be recording sound as this is a music video.
- Green room - There is no green room but there are many benches and areas to sit and rest while the shot and the scene is being prepared.
- Hazards - There aren't many hazards as we aren't using any large equipment with wires or hot lights. However in one of the locations such as the shed we will set off a smoke grenade which will remain in the closed area and may cause harm if inhaled so must not be breathed in.
- Permissions - I will need to email the manager of the Anglesey Abbey in order to ask for permission to film and to ask them if I can set off my pyrotechnics. I will also need to ask my friend's mother for permission to film on her land and set of a pyrotechnic there too.
- Lighting - We will be filming during the day and the intended lighting is meant to be cold and musky so we will be able to film during a cloudy day for the desired effects as well as during a sunny day as I can apply necessary filters to achieve this look so lighting won't be a problem.
- The public - We will be filming in part on private land with no public and on part in a public location but on a day which it is closed to the public so we won't have to worry about the public.
M1: Discuss the issues and risks for the proposed multiple effects
Permission to film and to use effects on location.
Legislation covering use of materials
Special effects containing materials: Smoke Grenades
Active Ingredient and material in the smoke grenades: Potassium Nitrate - Legal as it is not a regulated substance. It is only reportable.
The legal use of the pyrotechnic provided by the company, Enola Gaye, is clearly stated on the website where they state that: "Using Enola Gaye products or any type of pyrotechnic in a public places where you may induce worry or panic is illegal. It is not illegal to own or use pyrotechnics but they need to be used away from the general public or face potential prosecution by public disorder." This refers back to the use of pyrotechnics and fireworks law from 2004 which states that fireworks, including smoke grenades, cannot be used in public between the hours of 11pm-7am.

I will be using the smoke grenades on private land away from the public so the public won't be alarmed. This will be legal as it wont 'induce worry or public panic.'

Working within the scope of the risk assessment and health and safety guidelines
Permissions required to film and use effects on location or in studio: As seen above I have obtained permission from both location owners as I will be filming in two location. I have also obtained permission to use pyrotechnics so my special effects will be feasible.
The skills the production team would need: The skills that I require my team/actor to have is mainly responsibility and acting ability. I will need him to be responsible as many scenes include hazards which I will need him to be careful of and avoid which will make the whole production run smoother and be produced more realistically.
The process the team have gone through to gain permissions: I have personally texted my friends mother who owns the land in the first filming location and from her I had gained permission to film on her land and to set off my special effects. When it came to my second location I had to make a few phone calls to the Anglesey Abbey management department to pitch my project before getting told to wait for confirmation which I received two days after confirming my permission to film and use pyrotechnics.
The financial cost of permission and the time needed to gain permission: I wasn't required to pay a fee to film on either of my locations. However I did have to pay a fee of £11 to access my second location in order to conduct a location recce which led to me choosing this location.
The regulations governing control of substances, hazardous substances and health: One of the regulations which apply to me is the legislation regarding the use of fireworks which states that Category 2 and 3 fireworks can be used by the public however Category 4 fireworks can only be used by professionals and as my pyrotechnic counts as a Category 2 firework I am able to use it legally.
How the producer intends to work within the scope of the risk assessment and what procedures they will follow to make sure cast and crew are safe: As the producer I will conduct a brief conversation with my team before filming in order to discuss the risks which were identified and how to avoid them from happening. I will be sending my risk assessment to the team for them to read as well as the safety leaflet for the pyrotechnics.
